Matching Tattoo Ideas for Couples (That Still Make Sense Apart)

Matching tattoos usually spark two very different reactions: people who would never even consider it, and those who say, “Why not?”

As a fine-line tattoo artist, my take is pretty clear: these tattoos are a beautiful way to mark a special chapter or a deep connection—as long as you’re smart about it. I often see couples coming in with the same worry: “What if we regret it someday?” That’s why my number one rule is: don’t tattoo each other’s names.

“A great matching tattoo isn’t just one that brings you together; it’s one that still makes sense on its own”

This post isn’t about the basics; it’s about going a step further. Whether you’re celebrating an anniversary, an engagement, or just feel like it, matching tattoos can be elegant and deeply meaningful. Here are a few ideas I’ve worked on with my clients that prove love can also be minimalist.

⚠️ By the way! Even though I’m focusing on romantic couples here, these ideas work for any kind of duo. They are perfect for siblings, best friends, or even parents and their kids. And it doesn’t have to be just for two people, they work for groups of any size!

Special Dates: The classic that never fails for a couple tattoo

Let’s start with one of the most popular ideas that still works beautifully: tattooing a date that means the world to you both.

It could be the day you met, your anniversary, or any number that holds a special story. It’s a subtle, minimalist, and very personal design.

  • Why it works: It’s a “secret” only you two truly understand. Even if life takes you in different directions, that date still marks a significant chapter of your journey. Plus, it’s discreet, minimalist, and ages gracefully.

Pet Tattoos: Your most loyal bond

This one’s for you, Firulais!

If you want something shared but less “obvious,” tattooing your pet is an incredible choice.

The bond with your furry friend is so strong, and they’re often a huge part of a couple’s history. Plus, there’s one major advantage: you’d end up doing it separately anyway.

I’ve worked with couples who chose different styles for the same pet, one might go minimalist while the other adds some shading. That’s the beauty of it: it doesn’t have to be identical to be meaningful.

For example, take a look at this photo of a couple who tattooed their bunny, “Oreo.” They didn’t go for carbon copies; each chose their own size, and they decided differently on who wanted solid fills and who preferred just the fine line.

At the end of the day, a matching tattoo doesn’t have to be a mirror image, the magic lies in making it your own.

Matching tattoos of your favorite movie, tv show, video game, or band

Matching atypical stick figure tattoos on arms.

I’m sure there’s a movie or series you’ve watched more than once, a video game you often play together, or a band you both love.

It’s that “favorite something” for each of you that also brings you together as a couple, so having it on your skin isn’t something you’ll regret because, with or without a partner, you still love that series or movie.

Friends, Harry Potter, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, The Simpsons, Fortnite, Counter Strike, WoW, LoL, Hilary Duff… these could be some of the things you have in common and it’s very easy to get ideas from them.

For example, this couple decided to get a tattoo of the drawing from the intro of the series Atypical, which is one of their favorite shows. They decided to get the same design but swapped the positions of the boy and the girl depending on who was getting it. What do you think of this idea?

Matching tattoo that complements each other when you’re close and still holds its meaning when you’re apart

Matching space tattoos on forearms.

A popular trend in couple tattoos is choosing a design that complements or completes itself when both tattoos are together. For example:

  • Sun and moon
  • Two halves of an element that join to form a “whole” (like half an avocado, or a heart)
  • Related objects (like a rocket and a planet)

These designs beautifully represent the idea of a team, balance, or connection: couples who feel that they are stronger together and complement each other perfectly.

For instance, this couple got a rocket and a planet. Do you like it? I love it!

Symbolic tattoos, because you are unique and your story is unique

Couple with matching small cute cow tattoos on their waists.

I’m sure you’ve seen some tattoos that look like a joke, but once you hear the story behind them, you love them.

These kinds of tattoos are some of my favorites. From the outside, they might seem simple or even “weird,” but they have that “something” behind them that only you two understand, which makes them very intimate and personal.

For example, this couple decided to tattoo a little cow emoji. You might think: Why? What’s the point? But for them, it’s their special emoji. Since they started their relationship, they had this inside joke of saying “I love you mooo-ch, mooo-ch, moooooo-ch,” and the “mooo” eventually turned into the little cow.

I’m sure you and your partner also have something symbolic like this that connects you, and these tattoos are a beautiful way to represent your love in a unique and personalized way.

Matching couple tattoo with the coordinates of your home or a place that is important to you

Another great idea for couple tattoos is choosing a design that includes the coordinates, or a reference, to a significant place for both of you, for example:

  • The place where you met
  • The location of your first date
  • The spot where you got engaged
  • Your first home together

These tattoos are a subtle and elegant way to remember a special moment in your relationship and can be as simple or elaborate as you want.

For example, instead of coordinates, this couple decided on a drawing of their dream little house.

Do you have your own expressions? Tattoo your phrase or word!

This section has a veeeeery cool extra bonus, make sure to read it!

Two people with matching "Siete" tattoos on their torsos.

If none of the above has convinced you, there are many other ideas for couple tattoos that you can get, for example:

  • A word you use a lot
  • A special phrase
  • A quote that is meaningful to both of you
  • A shared song (each one a part, and when you’re together it reads in full)
  • An epic movie quote
  • A sentence from a book you love or that has deeply impacted you both
  • That word you say to each other often

These tattoos are a beautiful way to remind each other of the love and affection you share.

  • Extra and veeeeery cool idea: in the photo, you can see the word “Siete” (Seven). Beyond the meaning the word holds for the couple, in this case, each person wrote a part of the word. That is, the “Sie” part was written by her and the “te” part was written by him.

Mirror-designed tattoo. Something similar, but not identical.

Couple with matching olive branch tattoos

Maybe you have a design that is very personal and special to you and you both want to have it tattooed the same way and in the same area.

If you don’t want them to be identical, we can make one of the designs “backwards” so that when you come together, both designs look like a reflection of each other. It’s a very lovely idea for those who want to carry the same thing but have it look different.

This couple tattooed an olive branch, but each on a different side. If you like plants and flowers, maybe tattooing your birth flower could be a good idea.

As you’ve seen, getting a couple’s tattoo doesn’t have to be a bad idea. The important thing isn’t the concept itself, but how you approach it.

If you choose a design that makes sense for each of you, that represents something real and doesn’t depend solely on the relationship, it’s very hard to regret it.

Frequently asked questions about couple tattoos

It depends more on the idea than on the relationship. If the design makes sense for each person individually, it’s usually a good decision.

Names are usually the riskiest option. Also, very obvious or poorly thought-out designs that don’t have real meaning.

It depends on the style and the level of discretion you’re looking for. Areas like the forearm, wrist, or ankle usually work very well for small, fine-line designs.

No. In fact, many times it’s better if they aren’t. The important thing is that they are connected in some way, not that they are identical.

If the tattoo is well-planned, it will still make sense as a memory of a stage in your life or as something that represents you. That’s why I insist so much on avoiding names.
