Match tattoo ideas

Couple tattoos are that idea that some people would never do, while others would say: “Why not?”.
These types of tattoos are a wonderful way to remember a specific stage of life and to feel the connection between two people. However, as a tattoo artist, my suggestion is not to tattoo your names. First, because this post is written with the intention of giving you a few original suggestions, avoiding the basic ones. And secondly… haven’t we seen enough reels of people covering up their ex’s tattoos?
Whether you’re celebrating your anniversary, engagement, wedding, or simply feel like sealing your bond in a special way, couple tattoos can be a unique and meaningful way to express your love. In this post, I’m going to share some match tattoo ideas I’ve experienced with my own clients:
Let’s start with the quintessential couple tattoo: special dates.
We begin with a classic, but one that’s not as common as a name. Tattooing a date, a special number, perhaps an angel number, a year… It’s something only the two of you know. It could be the day you met, when you got engaged, your anniversary… The result is super minimalist, not too flashy, and quite discreet if you don’t want it to be overly visible. In the end, that number is something important to both of you, and in the future, that number will mark a stage in your life, so I doubt you’ll regret this decision, as I always say: at least you won’t have their name tattooed.

‘Firulais’ (Spanish dog’s funny name), this tattoo is for you. Or in other words: tattooing your pet.
If you don’t want to tattoo something too obviously personal, one option is something you’d each get separately: your pet. The love you have for a pet is as special as the one you share with your partner, and if the pet belongs to both of you, your little furry one, having it on your skin can be a great idea. For example, here’s a photo of a couple who got tattoos of their bunny “Oreo.” They didn’t get identical tattoos; each one chose their size and also decided who wanted filling inside the tattoo and who just wanted lines. In the end, a couple tattoo doesn’t have to be exactly the same, the beauty is that each person does it their way.

Match tattoo of your favorite movie/show
There’s probably a movie or show that you’ve watched more than once. One that brought you together in a conversation or the one you always have in the background when you don’t know what to watch. It’s each person’s favorite, but it also unites you as a couple, so having it on your skin shouldn’t be something you’d regret, because with or without a partner, you really like that movie or show. Friends, Harry Potter, Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, The Simpsons… These could be some you have in common and are easy to get ideas from. For example, this couple decided to get a tattoo of the intro drawing from the show Atypical, one of their favorite shows, so they decided to make it the same but switched the places of the boy and the girl depending on who was getting it. What do you think of this idea?

2 in 1, and 1 in 2: matching tattoos that complement each other when you’re close and still have their meaning when you’re apart.
A popular trend in couple tattoos is choosing a design that complements or completes each other when both tattoos are together. For example: a sun and a moon, two halves of a heart that come together to form a whole, half an avocado for each person… These designs are perfect for couples who feel stronger together and complement each other perfectly. For example, this couple got a rocket and a planet tattoo, what do you think? I love it!

Symbolic tattoo: because you’re unique and your story is unique
You’ve probably seen some tattoos that seem like a joke, but when they explain the story behind them, you love it. The thing is, you can give any meaning you want to something, even if it doesn’t seem serious. For example, this couple decided to tattoo an emoji of a little cow. You might think: Why? What’s the point? But for them, it’s their special emoji. Since the beginning of their relationship, they started jokingly saying “I love you soooo much, soooo much, soooooooooo much (te quiero muuuucho)” and the “soooo” (mooooo in Spanish, as the cows say) turned into the little cow. I’m sure you and your partner have something symbolic like that that connects you, and these tattoos are a beautiful way to represent your love in a unique and personalized way.

Home is where the heart is: match tattoo with the coordinates of your home
Another great idea for couple tattoos is to choose a design that includes the coordinates of a meaningful place for both of you, like the place where you met, where you had your first date, where you got engaged, or even the coordinates of your first home together. These tattoos are a subtle and elegant way to remember a special moment in your relationship and can be as simple or elaborate as you like.
For example, this couple decided, instead of the coordinates, to tattoo the drawing of their ideal little house.

Are you big talkers? Do you have your own expressions? Fantastic! Tattoo your phrase or word.
If none of the previous ideas convinced you, there are many other couple tattoo ideas you can get, such as a phrase or word. You can choose a phrase, word, or quote that is meaningful to both of you. Or even your favorite song, where each of you tattoos a part of the song so that when you’re together, the whole thing can be read. It could also be a quote from a movie or book you both love, or simply that word you say to each other often.
These tattoos are a beautiful way to remind each other of the love and affection you share.
We want to get something similar, but not identical. Done! Mirror-image designed tattoo.
Maybe you have a design that’s very personal and special to you, and you want both of you to have it tattooed the same, in the same spot, but we can make one of the designs “upside down” so that when you’re together, the two designs look like a reflection of each other. A beautiful idea for people who want the same thing but want it to look different. This couple got a little olive branch tattoo, but each of them got it on a different side. If you like plants and flowers, maybe tattooing your birth flower could be a good idea.

In summary, getting a couple tattoo doesn’t have to be something you regret, as long as it’s something that defines both of you individually and that you both love.
